An Analysis in Proficiency of the Accent of Compound Nouns in Japanese by Chinese speaking learners -- With Special Reference to the "Separated Compound Accent Structer" --

(in English) Accent patterns of Japanese compounds can be categorized into two types, depending on whether the Compound Accent Rule (CAR) applies to or not. In this research, we name the accent pattern to which the CAR applies as the Compound Accent Rule Structure, CARS, and the accent pattern to which the CAR doesn't apply as the Separated Compound Accent Structure, SCAS. Previous researches on instruction and acquisition of compound accent patterns by non-native learners of Japanese focused mainly on the former and the latter has scarcely been mentioned. In this research, we compare accent patterns of CARS type and SCAS type compounds by 7 Chinese speaking learners. We confirmed that mastery of the SCAS type is lower by far than that of the CARS type, and that overgeneralization occurs frequently in certain specific patterns, which are "the contrastive prefix", "the parallel structure", and "the name + the name of the position." Also, we learned that mastery of the SCAS pattern due to "the right-branching structure" is difficult. These results suggest that the instruction of the SCAS is important and needed.
